Press-Enterprise — A fundraiser to benefit the family of Eastvale resident Sgt. Gilbert Cortez will be held on Thursday, April 18, at the On the Border restaurant at the Eastvale Gateway shopping center.
The event is being sponsored by the Eastvale Wives of Law Enforcement and Firefighters, the California Corrections Peace Officers Association, the Eastvale Community Foundation and the Corona-Norco Teachers Association.
Cortez, 46 and his K-9 Mattie were killed March 25, in a rollover crash on Route 79 in San Diego County.
Cortez, a correctional officer assigned to the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, was leading three other K-9 teams in separate cars driving south on 79 in San Diego County, on their way to conduct a contraband search of La Cima Fire Camp, a corrections department news release stated.
Cortez is survived by his wife, two children and his parents.
The April 18 event will include a display of emergency vehicles and police K-9s,
