Off-duty officer foils suspected jail work crew escape

The Times-StandardAn off-duty police officer stopped a Humboldt County jail inmate from escaping from a roadside work crew near Cooper Gulch in Eureka on Friday.

An inmate work crew was clearing brush near Cooper Gulch when inmate James Miles, of McKinleyville, escaped, according to a Humboldt County jail press release.

The correctional officer supervising the crew overheard a male voice yelling “Stop!” and “Get on the ground!” according to the release. The correctional officer went to investigate, and realized Miles had escaped.

An off-duty police officer in the area saw Miles running and recognized him, the release said. He apprehended Miles and turned him over to the correctional officer.

The release said Miles was returned to the jail and booked on suspicion of escape from a county jail.

Miles was serving 365 days in jail for a misdemeanor violation of probation. If convicted of the escape, Miles could face up to one additional year in the county jail, according to the release.
