CA corrections officer, dog killed in rollover accident

WARNER SPRINGS (CNS) - An on-duty state corrections officer and a service dog were
killed in a solo car crash Monday on State Route 79, east of Lake Henshaw.

The marked Ford Crown Victoria was in a small caravan of southbound prison vehicles when it veered out of control for unknown reasons and overturned about a half-mile from San Felipe Road in the Warner Springs area shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Medics took the injured officer to a nearby fire station, where he died before he could be put into an emergency-services helicopter for a flight to a trauma center. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The dog died at the scene of the crash.

There were no other occupants of the sedan, the CHP reported.

The accident occurred as about a half-dozen corrections vehicles were en route to inspect inmate-staffed back-country fire camps in eastern San Diego County, said Jeffrey Callison, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Authorities closed the two-lane rural road in the area to allow for investigations and cleanup.

Why can't CDCR buy new cars. His crown vic with that type of headlights was last built in 1997. Come on CDCR and spend some money on Officer safety. We will have to wait until the official report is released.
