Reality Check: Would 10,000 Released State Prisoners Pose Threat?

NBC Bay Area — The stalling for California Gov. Jerry Brown and his administration could be coming to an end.

A three-judge federal court has demanded that California cut down its prison population to 137.5 percent of capacity, per a ruling upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

In practical terms, that means reducing the California state prison population by about 10,000 people before December 31.

The California Police Chiefs Association has come out publicly against the release, claiming it will contribute to higher crime levels and pose a threat to public safety.
