Poughkeepsie Journal — An inmate who attempted to escape from Fishkill Correctional Facility stabbed a corrections officer in the neck with a pen, before stealing her keys, according to a statement from the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.
The officer, whose name was not released, was able to free herself and activate an alarm for help, according to the statement. She survived the attack. Officers were able to subdue the inmate before he was able to injure anybody else.
“Everyday, our officers face very dangerous situations like this,” said Donn Rowe, president of the NYSCOPBA. “We’re hoping for a quick recovery for this officer, who was fortunate her injuries were not more serious.”
The officer who was attacked remains off-duty, the statement said.
The inmate, Cody Yaun, was eligible for parole Aug. 28, according to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website. Yaun was sentenced for a third-degree rape charge, a felony, according to the website.
