Kokomo Tribune — A 56-year-old guard at Miami Correctional Facility is dead after suffering a heart attack Monday inside a security tower at the prison.
Zane E. Rasmussen was alone inside the tower when he suffered a “massive heart attack” early Monday morning, according to public information officer Ann Hubbard.
She said prison officials first suspected something was wrong when Rasmussen failed to make a required hourly wellness check call. When officials called to see where he was, no one answered.
Guards were immediately dispatched to check on Rasmussen, where he was found deceased inside the tower.
Hubbard said officials believe Rasmussen tried to get to nitroglycerin pills he had on hand to stop the heart attack, but was unable to reach them before he died.
“It’s a tragic situation for a lot of people,” she said. “He will be greatly missed. He was a great officer and a great person.”
Rasmussen had worked at the prison since 2002.
Hubbard said the Indiana Department of Corrections activated its Critical Incident Stress Management Team to help prison employees cope with the incident. continue reading...
