3 Chino guards injured in attack by inmate, prison reports

Daily BulletinThree corrections officers were injured when an inmate attacked them at the California Institution for Men, prison officials said.

Two of the guards where treated and released Friday, said Dana Simas, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, in an email exchange. The third was discharged from the hospital Saturday after being monitored for a possible concussion, Simas said.

Inmate Justin Tafua allegedly assaulted the three officers about 11:40 a.m. Friday in a common area of Facility D.

Tafua did not use a weapon, according to Simas.

Facility D is a low-level security unit for inmates least likely to misbehave, according to the prison’s website. About 2,000 inmates are spread among 10 units.

Tafua was serving a five-year sentence stemming from a carjacking and robbery in San Diego County, according to Simas.

He was expected to be paroled on Dec. 1, she added.

Tafua was moved to the Administrative Segregation Unit, separated from the general prison population.

The case will be referred to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges, Simas said.
