Authorities: Corrections Officer Shoots, Wounds Ex’s New Boyfriend

A 32-year-old New York City correction officer allegedly shot and wounded the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend, who is also a correction officer, police said Tuesday.

As 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported, the officer, Dale Moore, contended that he fired in self-defense. He was off duty when he shot a man at the intersection of Utica Avenue and Clarendon Road in Brooklyn around 1:50 p.m.

The New York City Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association said Moore was driving in his car when he was cut off by another car being driven by his ex-girlfriend, Correction Capt. Shalonda Smith.

At that point, everyone pulled over and Moore got out of his car. Smith and her current boyfriend also exited their car.

The other man approached Moore, who said he thought the other man had a gun. He pulled out his own gun and opened fire, the union said.

The man was taken to Kings County Hospital Center in critical condition, according to published reports.

Moore joined the Correction Department in 2008, Smith in 2004. Both are assigned to the George Motchan Detention Center on Rikers Island.

Authorities have not said whether action will be taken against Moore.
