- A 30-year-old inmate at Calipatria State Prison died after his cellmate reportedly fatally slashed his neck in their cell Monday morning, according to a prison official.
The inmate, whose name is not being released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead around 7:40 a.m., and the 30-year-old suspect, whose name is also not yet released, was arrested, Calipatria Prison Lt. Jorge Santana said.
Both are from the Los Angeles area, and the victim was facing a sentence of 68 years to life for second-degree robbery while the suspect was facing a sentence of 40 years to life for second-degree murder.
Prison staff believes a razor blade was used in the attack. Inmates are allowed use of disposable razors but sometimes remove the blade to construct weapons which is a violation of prison rules, Santana explained.
