The death toll has risen after a bloody prison riot in Venezuela, with a local hospital director saying 61 people died and 120 were injured.
Ruy Medina is director of Central Hospital in the city of Barquisimeto. Medina told The Associated Press on Saturday that the number of dead from the riot at Uribana prison had risen to 61.
He told other news media initially on Friday that about 50 were killed. He said nearly all of the injuries were from gunshots. Medina said that of the 120 who were wounded, 45 of them remained hospitalized.
The authorities have yet to provide an official death toll and say they have begun to evacuate the prison while investigating.
