Ventura inmates to begin receiving email correspondence

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department announced inmates at Ventura County Jail will be allowed to receive emails beginning on Feb. 11.

The "email an inmate" program is fee-based, and is designed to be an efficient and contemporary means of communication with inmates.

The emails will be printed and delivered to the addressed inmate. Inmates will not allowed to respond electronically.

Only text will be allowed on email to inmates. The emails will be limited to a maximum of about 4,500 characters, equivalent to about one page. Users can purchase blocks of email of 10 ($10), 25 ($23.75) and 50 ($45), plus a processing fee of $1.50. Each inmate will be allowed to receive up to five emails per day per sender.

Revenue generated from the program will go toward operating costs and processing, and into the Inmate Welfare Fund Trust account. The IWFT exists for the funding of education, vocation, recreation and reentry programs for inmates.

Sending email to inmates will be available on the Ventura County Sheriff's Dept. website.

Inmates will still be able to send and receive postal mail.
