The Californian — Ten inmates have been taken to local hospitals with stab wounds following a riot Thursday morning at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano.
Prison spokesman Lt. Jeff Smith said the riot began about 9:51 a.m. in a recreation yard of Facility B and lasted between five to 10 minutes. It's unknown what started the riot or how many people were involved, but about 50 to 70 inmates were on each side of the yard when it happened.
Guards used chemical agents and fired sponge rounds to stop the fighting, Smith said. The severity of the injuries was not immediately known.
