KSBY 6 — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says an inmate attacked a correctional officer at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo with a handmade weapon on Wednesday.
It happened around 10:00 am in a medium-custody yard.
Officials say inmate William Mikeworth hit the officer in the head and neck several times. Another officer who tried to subdue Mikeworth was also injured.
The two officers were taken to the hospital to be treated for slash wounds. Their injuries are non-life threatening.
CDCR officials say Mikeworth, 39, was admitted to the prison system on September 9, 2008 from San Bernardino County with a nine-year sentence for assault with a deadly weapon. He has been at CMC since February 18, 2013.
The incident is being reviewed by CMC investigators and the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office.
