Inside CDCR — CDCR assisted the FBI in investigating a case that resulted in a federal indictment that added 19 counts – including racketeering conspiracy and attempted murder – against three men for their alleged participation in the Nuestra Familia gang, according to the U.S. Justice Department.
Gary Anthony Romero, 48, of Stockton and Joe Anthony Felix, 34, of Modesto were first charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine by a federal grand jury in Fresno. The new or superseding indictment, returned under seal on April 30, includes all the charges alleged in the original indictment, as well as new charges. A new defendant, Jesus Gomez Felix, 30, of Modesto, was also charged.
According to the superseding indictment, Nuestra Familia is a prison gang that originally formed in the California state prison system in the 1960s. Nuestra Familia leaders control and direct the gang’s criminal activities both inside and outside of the prison system.
This case was investigated by the Central Valley Gang Impact Task Force under the FBI’s Safe Streets Initiative, with the assistance of CDCR, the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, Modesto Police Department, Ceres Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Stanislaus County Probation Department.
