The reputed gang member suspected in the Christmas Day slaying of a community volunteer had been released early from custody under the state's prison realignment program, officials said Friday.
According to court documents and state and county officials, Larry Darnell Bishop, 20, of Chino was granted early release under Assembly Bill 109 despite being a three-time convicted felon.
Bishop is suspected of killing Victor McClinton, 49, of Pasadena. He and four other men were arrested last week in connection with the case. Police did not announce the arrests until late Wednesday.
"How many more people are going to die?" said retired state parole Agent Caroline Aguirre.
When A.B. 109 was passed by the legislature it was billed as a public safety measure, she said.
"It had nothing to do with public safety," Aguirre added.
A longtime Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department employee and founder of a Pasadena nonprofit youth sports league, McClinton was outside his home in the 1900 block of Newport Avenue about 11 a.m. on Dec. 25 when a stray bullet from a nearby gang-related shooting found him, officials said.
