NORCO: Prison ridding grounds of feral cats

Press EnterpriseMistreatment is a common complaint at prisons, but at California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, the alleged target is not the inmates.

It’s the cats.

Some current and former prison employees are accusing administrators of handing the feral cats — more than 100 of them — a death sentence.

In a Wednesday, June 5, memo to staff, Warden Cynthia Tampkins announced that because of health concerns, “proactive measures to eradicate the cats from CRC shall be taken immediately.”

While the prison hopes that catching the cats and taking them to an animal shelter will give them a chance to be adopted, prison employees fear they’re more likely to be euthanized.

The first step, already taken by the prison, was to stop feeding them along with other raccoons and skunks on the prison grounds.

As a result, a correctional officer who would not give his name out of concern for his job, said, “the raccoons are tearing the kittens apart, and cats are eating other cats.”

Martin Alexi, spokesman for the medium-security prison with about 4,000 inmates, said there is no evidence of that. The issue arose after someone complained to state officials, who ordered the cats removed to prevent health hazards, Alexi said.
